John Siket
ATP Instructor
I had an interest in sound at an early age. One day, my father explained the rudiments of stereophonic sound while we listened to the Beach Boy's "Endless Summer." A few years later, I bought an inexpensive Moog synthesizer sold by Radio Shack. I loved fiddling with it all the parameters, but I really couldn't play at all! After recording at an eight-track studio in Colorado, I sat back and watched the engineer manipulate our recording and heard the music start to change. I thought to myself, "Now that's what I really want to do!" In 1988, I got an entry-level position at Water Music Recorders in Hoboken, NJ. (Yes, there is such a place…) There I worked with Chris Stamey, Freedy Johnston, Yo La Tengo, Peter Holsapple, Rob Grenoble, Sweet Lizard Illtet, Alex Chilton, Andrew Loog-Oldham and many, many other great musical personalities. After a few years, I got curious as to, "How they were doing it…" over across the Hudson in Manhattan. I was fortunate to get an assistant's job at Sound On Sound on West 45th Street. There I got to work on many jingles, tons of jazz sessions (live to two-track!) and various other types of music (Fela Kuti!) that I had no previous exposure to.
Lately, I have engineered Peter Murphy's latest, produced for Matisyahu and am producing the great up and coming artist Jeff Taylor for Rockwood/Atlantic! Also, I am teaching a "Mixing" class at SAE's New York City campus. |
